Between Statistical Patterns and Coherent motions - On Strategies for Flow-Structure Identification

Formation, persistence and dynamics of vortical flow structures predominate various flow scenarios in nature and technical application. Documented efforts to characterize these structures go back to the 15th century. Today the variety of possible evaluation techniques covers a number of different qualitative and quantitative approaches, which span from simple flow visualization and corresponding topology analysis to volumetric time-resolved measurement techniques. A selection of these techniques will be revisited, where Eulerian and Lagrangian approaches (e.g. POD, FTLE) are distinguished and combined. Additional emphasis is placed on the identification and interpretation singular point so as to uncover the topological skeleton of (unsteady) velocity fields. The statistical, instantaneous, temporal and modal information as extracted from either method will be contrasted - supported with examples - such that remarks on respective strengths and weaknesses can be derived.
